One of search engine marketing’s (SEM’s) frustrations this year was how incompatible Google AdWords Editor was with Microsoft’s Vista operating system.   AdWords Editor is simply a must have for marketers juggling dozens of accounts or supervising many times more that number. The program has terrific, time saving shortcuts and views of data that make terrific sense.  After all, if the company’s biggest users have tools to help them spend more, then profitability is sure to follow.

Google’s new version 7 of AdWords Editor took away the pain of installing the software on a system.   There was no reason configuring and deploying the software took so long, especially to simply patch the program and make the patch optionally available.   This was a blatant example of the disregard with which Google often treats other systems and all but its largest advertisers.  eBay suffered these growing pains on a much more scale and found that multiple rebellions had to be quashed inside the company and inside the customer base.

If you receive error 2739 when installing AdWords Editor on Windows Vista, you can complete the installation by following one of the sets of steps below.

If you know that you’re logged in as an administrator:

1. Click the Start button > Run, then type ‘cmd’.
2. Click OK.
3. In the command prompt, type ‘cd c:windowssystem32,’ then Enter.
4. Type ‘regsvr32 jscript.dll’, then Enter.
5. Type ‘regsvr32 vbscript.dll’, then Enter.
6. Type ‘exit’, then Enter to close the command prompt.

If you’re not logged in as an administrator, or you’re not sure:

1. Click the Start button > Programs or All Programs > Accessories.
2. Right-click ‘Command Prompt.’ and choose ‘Run as administrator.’
3. Click OK.
4. The command prompt that opens should say ‘Administrator’ in the title. Type ‘cd c:windowssystem32,’ then Enter.
5. Type ‘regsvr32 jscript.dll’, then Enter.
6. Type ‘regsvr32 vbscript.dll’, then Enter.
7. Type ‘exit’, then Enter to close the command prompt.
